Academic Objectives
Students will address the professional, legal and ethical issues and responsibilities of a massage therapist from the standpoint of both business owner and practitioner within the broader context of the healthcare field, to include: medical terminology, record keeping, scope of practice, standards of practice, confidentiality, informed consent, communications skills, HIPPA regulations, credentialing and licensing, business management, insurance coverage and more.
Students will become proficient in the application of a variety of proven treatment techniques designed to reduce and/or eliminate muscular pain, increase flexibility, enhance athletic performance and support existing levels of physical fitness and wellness.
Students will gain and in-depth understanding of the mechanics of the human body for both self-care and as a tool for the interpretation and analysis of assessment information used in developing appropriate, effective care / treatment plans for a range of populations.
Students will learn the science and art of Therapeutic Massage to include:
- Basic and advanced manipulations and techniques
- Indications and contraindications
- Hygiene, sanitation and safety protocols
- Evaluation procedures
- Clinical reasoning and problem solving methods
- Complementary bodywork systems such as Sports Massage; Hydrotherapy; Shiatsu; Reflexology; Five Element and Zen Shiatsu Theory; Geriatric, Prenatal and Infant Massage; Connective Tissue Approaches and Trigger Point Therapy.
